The UN committee has urged a full investigation into alleged rights abuses at Diego Garcia the British territory in the Indian Ocean leased by the US military. The island has been used to transfer suspected terrorists to third countries without court authorization, a process which is known as "extraordinary rendition." Britain ejected roughly 2,000 islanders from Diego Garcia when it leased the island to the US and the island is now home to hundreds of US military personnel and contractors. The committee's report also says Britain's Official Secrets Act last amended in 1989 during the Cold War to protect national security data is used to silence government whistleblowers and keep important information from the public. "The committee remains concerned that powers under the Official Secrets Act have been exercised to frustrate former employees of the crown from bringing into the public domain issues of genuine public interest, and can be exercised to prevent the media from publishing such matters," said the UN report.
