An Israeli town is suing Google because a feature of its worldwide map service shows the town was built on the ruins of an Arab village.

Officials from Kiryat Yam deny Arabs were displaced when the town was formed during the1948 Arab-Israeli War.

"This obviously cannot be true," claimed town official Naty Keyzilberman, who filed a slander complaint against Google with Israel's police.

Google Earth user Thameen Darby inserted a note on the map saying Kiryat Yam, a city in Israel located north of Haifa, was built on the location of the Arab village Ghawarina.

"This is one of the Palestinian localities evacuated and destroyed after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war," wrote Darby, 30, a Palestinian doctor, citing the "palestineremembered" website.

Google refused to remove the annotation and defended the practice of allowing its users to post information in Google Earth, its satellite imagery-based mapping software.

"This particular user-contributed annotation does not breach our Terms and Conditions nor is it in any way illegal," Google stated.

Hundreds of thousands of Arabs fled or were expelled during the 1948 war.Fighting the Arab armies, the Israeli forces overran many Arab villages.
