Iran wants London terrorist to stand trial
October 22 2008

The UK will release the only surviving terrorist from the Iranian embassy (seen here) siege in 1980.
A former Iranian diplomat says the only surviving culprit involved in a 1980 terrorist attack in London should be tried by a neutral court.

Fowzi Badavi-Nejad is the only surviving terrorist of six hostage-takers who laid siege on the Iranian Embassy in London in May 1980. He is to be released when he completes his prison sentence in the UK.

Gholam-Ali Afrouz, former Iranian charge d'affaires in London, said in an interview with IRNA that Badavi-Nejad should be handed to Iranian officials.

"We want to try Badavi-Nejad in a public court where his lawyer and the British envoy are present," Afrouz said.

Badavi-Nejad has reportedly been assured he would not be deported to his native Iran. He would instead stay in Britain at taxpayers' expense.

The former Iranian diplomat also condemned London for the lack of security around the embassy in London.

"At the time of attack, only one guard was on duty who was having coffee out of his post," Afrouz said.

According to documents published by IRNA, Iranian officials in London had asked the Diplomatic Protection Group to reinforce security around the embassy days before the attack.
